5 minutes from Punakaiki coming towards Westport is Irimahuwhero in the Paparoa National Park.

Irimahuwhero means "the place of the hanging red hair"

Well known to generations of Maori travellers, the name comes from the crimson Rata flowers which festoon the coastal bluffs at the height of summer.

The Danish Barque 'Alexandra' was wrecked 1.5kms off here in 1902.
All the crew escaped by placing a wooden plank from the ship onto the rocks.
